Moving to Bradenton (?)

I am considering moving to Bradenton. I lived in Florida ten years ago (Orlando) for two years and I loved it. I have been to the St.Pete/Tampa area several times (I used to have to drive to Tampa from Orlando as part of a job I had) but I am thinking of Bradenton because:
it's a little inland (hurricanes), seems to not be a major tourist city, is big enough but not too big, it's close to the water, and seems to have some cool attractions.
On the downside:
the hot hot hot summers, crime seems higher than where I am now (Nashua NH, 45 min north of Boston), I have no friends or family there
